The Club has never engaged players in a professional capacity, however we do get applications from time to time.
One which was received early in 2006 was discussed at Committee. The following is an extract from the application email and the minutes.
“Besides of this, I have the same bowling action style as legend Off-spinner Murlidharan of Srilanka. I have 11 different bowling verities and can Doosra with 3 different stunning variations. Others are small spin, very big spin, sharp spin, top spin, top spin bouncer, cutting in air, cutting out air, straighter one, quick in air but getting slow after pitching, slow in air but skits very sharply after pitching and my special mystery bowl cutting out in air but spins in sharply after pitching. Nowadays I am working on a new mystery ball.”
". . . Ken had fielded emails from two players seeking to join an English club for the 2006 season. One was read out from a bowler with 12 different varieties of off break, who was currently working on a thirteenth 'mystery ball'. It was decided not to follow up this offer as Bevan ** seems unable to read our current spinners who do not turn the ball at all, and it was felt that either he would go to an early grave trying to fathom 13 variations or we would lose too many games by the number of byes conceded."
** (Bevan is our former Club Skipper and current 1st XI stumper who has won the League wicket keeping title in 2005 and 2008)
